Dog Man and Cat Kid

by Dav Pilkey

In Dav Pilkey’s Dog Man and Cat Kid, Dog Man’s adventures reach the movie set, where filmmaking becomes tangled with crime-fighting and comic chaos. Meanwhile, the kitten Li’l Petey challenges his creator, Petey, to reconsider what it means to be good, and teams up with Dog Man and the robot 80-HD to help save the day.

Big Idea

Being a hero involves kindness, cooperation, and choices—not simply being labeled good or bad. Pilkey’s graphic storytelling also shows how pictures, dialogue, and page design can change the speed and emotional impact of a story.

Discussion Questions

1.How does Li’l Petey challenge Petey’s ideas about being good or bad? Which moments help you understand their different viewpoints?
2.What makes Dog Man, Li’l Petey, and 80-HD effective as a team? How do their different strengths help them?
3.How does the movie-making storyline change the way we think about heroes, appearances, and real actions?
4.Where does Pilkey use humor during a serious or dangerous moment? How does that humor affect your feelings about the characters?
5.Choose a scene that feels fast and one that feels slower. What do the panels, words, and illustrations do differently?

Lesson Plan

⏱ 45 minutes📦 Copies of the book or selected pages, paper or six-panel comic templates, pencils, erasers, crayons or markers, and a timer

Learning Goals

Explain how a character’s actions and dialogue reveal traits and contribute to events.
Describe how illustrations and written language work together to communicate action, humor, and emotion.
Create a comic with an organized beginning, problem, response, and resolution.
Use panel size, dialogue length, and a deliberate pause to control narrative pacing.
Explain how kindness and cooperation can shape a character’s choices.

Activity Steps

1.Read or revisit a short action sequence and a quieter exchange between Petey and Li’l Petey. Ask students to identify evidence that makes each passage feel fast or slow.
2.Model a simple movie-set problem, such as a falling backdrop. Sketch three small action panels, then a larger panel showing a character checking whether everyone is safe.
3.Have students plan a six-panel comic featuring Dog Man, Li’l Petey, and 80-HD. Include a movie-set problem, teamwork, and a caring choice; Petey may appear as an optional fourth character.
4.Students draw and write their comics, using brief dialogue or sound effects for action and a larger or less crowded panel for the caring moment.
5.Partners perform their comics aloud, adjusting reading speed and pausing at the emotional moment. Each partner identifies one effective pacing choice.
6.Invite students to revise one panel and complete an exit reflection: 'My story speeds up when ____. It slows down when ____, because ____.'

Pace-Write-Read Study with Pace-Write It!

Dog Man and Cat Kid makes writing craft visible. Dav Pilkey distributes storytelling across speech balloons, captions, expressive drawings, and sequences of panels, allowing readers to see how a story moves as well as what happens. The movie-making storyline offers a useful connection: like a filmmaker, a comics creator decides what to show, how closely to frame it, and when to move to the next moment. Students can compare an action sequence with a quieter Petey–Li’l Petey exchange to investigate how those decisions guide attention. For this Pace-Write-Read study, students first notice pacing choices, then try them in their own comics, and finally read their work aloud to test the effect. Dog Man’s physical comedy, Li’l Petey’s earnest questions, Petey’s exasperation, and 80-HD’s visual expressiveness offer different ways to communicate personality and control tempo. The goal is not to make every scene fast: students learn that a pause for kindness or reflection can matter as much as a rapid rescue or a punch line.

Element	How to notice or teach it in the novel
Pacing	Compare a Dog Man action sequence with an exchange between Petey and Li’l Petey. Notice how panel count, dialogue, and the amount of action shown affect the reader’s sense of speed.
Plot	Trace how the movie-making events and Petey’s relationship with Li’l Petey develop across the book. Ask students which events create new problems and which move characters toward a solution.
Prosody	Read Petey’s and Li’l Petey’s speech balloons aloud using voices supported by their expressions and punctuation. Discuss how emphasis, speed, and pauses change the meaning of the exchange.
Word	Examine a short balloon, caption, or sound effect in a Dog Man action scene. Ask how replacing one word with a longer or less energetic choice would affect the pace.
Concept	Explore the contrast between performing heroism for a movie and making genuinely helpful choices. Have students turn that concept into a small problem that can be shown in a comic.
Voice & Worldview	Compare Li’l Petey’s hopeful approach with Petey’s more cynical assumptions. Ask how their language and reactions make the same situation feel different.
Point of View	Distinguish the perspective supplied by captions from what readers learn through character dialogue and drawings. Redraw one event from Petey’s perspective, then from Li’l Petey’s.
Setting & Place	Study the movie-set scenes for visual clues that establish where the action happens. Discuss how a setting involving staged action creates opportunities for real confusion and danger.
Original Characters	Identify the recognizable combinations that make Dog Man, Li’l Petey, and 80-HD distinctive. Students can invent a new supporting character with a particular strength, limitation, and visual feature.
Dialogue	Look at how Petey and Li’l Petey’s conversations reveal conflict without long explanations. Have students write a brief exchange in which a caring question interrupts an impatient response.
Details	Find a facial expression or background detail that adds information beyond the words. Ask whether removing it would change the joke, the emotion, or the reader’s understanding.
Descriptions	Notice how Pilkey often lets drawings describe movement and emotion rather than adding prose. Students can translate a panel into a descriptive sentence, then decide what the image communicates more efficiently.
Firsts	Study the first appearance of a character or the first panel of a movie-related scene. Ask what the reader learns immediately and what Pilkey leaves to be discovered.
Immediacy & Engagement	Choose a panel where Dog Man is already in motion or a character reacts strongly. Discuss how beginning with an action or reaction draws readers into the moment.
Story Scenes, Summaries & Structures	Compare moments presented panel by panel with captions or transitions that move past less important time. Students decide which part of their rescue needs a full scene and which can be compressed.
Tension / Suspense / Surprise	Pause before an action outcome or comic reveal and ask students to predict what comes next. Then identify the visual and verbal clues that made the outcome expected or surprising.
Flashback, Flash-Forward, Cliffhanger	Check whether a selected passage looks backward, anticipates a future event, or leaves a problem unresolved; do not assume all three techniques appear. Use an unresolved Dog Man problem to practice creating a cliffhanger panel.
Page Turns and Chapter Breaks	Examine what readers know just before a page turn or chapter ending. Ask whether the break delays an answer, prepares a joke, or signals a change in the action.
Pace & Creativity	Use one Dog Man rescue moment as a model, then draw an original rescue in three panels and in six panels. Discuss how adding reaction shots or intermediate actions changes the experience.
Play	Explore the playful contrast between superhero adventure and Dog Man’s doglike behavior. Invite students to test an unexpected but character-appropriate response to a movie-set problem.
Performance	Connect the movie storyline with a classroom performance of a comic page. Assign voices and sound effects, then discuss how acting choices can highlight pacing already suggested by the panels.
Personality	Compare Dog Man’s physical responses, Li’l Petey’s earnest speech, and Petey’s expressions. Ask students to show personality through a single action rather than a label such as 'kind' or 'grumpy.'
Humor	Identify a joke built from a mismatch between expectations and a character’s behavior. Map its setup and payoff, including any reaction panel that gives readers time to enjoy it.
Pause	Look for a reaction or quiet panel in a Petey–Li’l Petey exchange. Discuss how a moment with little action can make a question, feeling, or choice stand out.
Poetry / Poetic Devices	Examine available sound effects or playful wording for repeated sounds, exaggeration, or other poetic devices. Explain that these techniques can energize comics even though the book is not a verse narrative.
Repetition	Track a recurring behavior, idea, or pattern in Petey and Li’l Petey’s interactions. Ask how repetition establishes expectations that Pilkey can later reinforce or overturn.
Rhythm	Read a sequence of short balloons followed by a longer response aloud. Notice how alternating action, speech, and reaction produces a rhythm in scenes featuring Dog Man or Petey.
Punctuation	Inspect punctuation in an excited exchange or action scene and compare it with the characters’ expressions. Students can revise the punctuation in one balloon and explain how its spoken delivery changes.
Questions	Explore how Li’l Petey’s questions challenge Petey rather than merely request information. Students write a question that could make a character stop and reconsider an unkind plan.
Compare-Contrast	Compare Petey and Li’l Petey’s responses to a shared problem, using dialogue and pictures as evidence. Then compare how the book presents staged heroics and genuinely helpful actions.
Objects	Choose a visible prop or piece of equipment in a movie-set scene and trace its role. Discuss how an object can establish setting, cause trouble, or become part of a solution.
Threes	Use the trio of Dog Man, Li’l Petey, and 80-HD to explore three complementary responses to a problem. Students can also try a three-beat joke, while checking rather than assuming that a chosen passage uses this pattern.
Lists	Make a brief list of what the team needs to manage a movie-set emergency. Turn the list into successive panels and compare that paced sequence with putting all the information in one balloon.
White Space & Negative Space	Compare a crowded action panel with a less crowded character-focused panel. Ask how open space around Li’l Petey or Petey can direct attention toward an expression or a line of dialogue.
Art & Graphics	Study how motion marks, lettering, and exaggerated expressions communicate Dog Man’s action and the cats’ emotions. Students identify information conveyed graphically that the words do not repeat.
Interactives & Gamification	Try the book’s Flip-O-Rama feature and discuss how the reader’s physical movement helps animate the action. Compare this reader-controlled experience with the pace of an ordinary panel sequence.
Placement	Follow the positions of balloons, characters, and action across a selected page. Ask how placement guides reading order and determines when readers notice a reaction or punch line.
Form	Discuss how the graphic-novel form allows Dog Man’s physical comedy and Petey’s conversations to work differently. Convert a short exchange into prose to discover what must be added when pictures disappear.
Dummy	Explain that a dummy is a rough page-by-page mock-up, not a finished comic. Students fold scrap paper into a mini-book and test where a Dog Man rescue, a Li’l Petey question, and a reveal should fall.
Passion	Identify moments that suggest enthusiasm for cartooning, playful action, and the possibility of becoming better. Students choose a value they care about and give it to a character through an action rather than a lecture.

Pace-Write It!

20-minute task: 'Freeze the Movie-Set Rescue!' Minutes 0–4: Revisit a brief movie-related passage and a Petey–Li’l Petey exchange; identify one fast-paced choice and one slower, reflective choice. Minutes 4–7: Students plan an original four-panel scene—not an event claimed to occur in the book—in which a movie prop starts to fall, Dog Man and 80-HD respond, and Li’l Petey notices someone who needs reassurance. Minutes 7–14: Draw the comic, using two quick action panels, one quiet reaction panel, and a final panel showing a kind choice; add brief dialogue and an optional sound effect. Minutes 14–18: Partners read their comics aloud, changing speed and pausing at the quiet panel, then explain which visual or verbal choice signaled the pause. Minutes 18–20: Each student revises one feature and completes the sentence, 'I slowed the story here so readers would notice ____.'

Classroom Activities

Hero Choices: Fast Action, Slow Kindness

Students create an original six-panel comic featuring Dog Man, Li’l Petey, and 80-HD responding to a movie-set mishap. They use several quick panels for the rescue, then slow the story for a caring choice inspired by Li’l Petey’s influence on Petey. Partners read the comics aloud and explain how the panel design changes the pace.
